Well, 10/21 did not work as well as we had hoped, but we do have 2 grand prize winners!
They are:
Rhonda Washington and Vince Cortese.
Congratulations to both of you!
You will receive an e-mail today, letting you know when/how to pick up your prize.
Thanks to everyone who participated.
Eek! Due to some unforseen problems, we are a little behind, but we can catch up - and rather quickly.
This week, I’d like us to focus on instant messaging and how it’s used in the library.
Instant messaging is not really new, but it’s beginning to be used by many organizations, including the library, as a way to offer reference support for students when they are unable to come to the library in person. Most of you are probably familiar with instant messaging from Facebook, MySpace, Yahoo or AOL, to name a few. Downloading and installing these clients is restricted on campus, so the library is using a new service - Meebo.
For this week, surf on over to the library website at http://www.lib.midlandstech.edu and click on Ask a Librarian (top right corner of the banner). Click in the box and send an im - we’ll record your name and you’ll be all caught up!
Remember, there are only a couple of more weeks left and those who participate for all 10 weeks will be entered to win a video iPod!
See you online…
Personalizing a web page is nothing new and is a good way to have what you need where you need it. Yahoo introduced personalized pages years ago. More recently, Google began allowing personalized web pages. Google takes it one step further, though, by allowing people to build “Google Gadgets” or small applications that can be added to your iGoogle page. The library created a Google Gadget that allows users to search the library catalog from within your iGoogle page.
For this week, let’s create an iGoogle page and add the library catalog gadget.
Here are the directions:
1. Create a Google Account by going here and filling in the form: http://www.google.com/ig?hl=en&source=iglk
2. Log in to your newly created account and start personalizing - make it a page you can use.
3. While you are logged in, add the library Google Gadget: http://www.google.com/ig/add?moduleurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lib.midlandstech.edu%2Fgoogle%2Fmtccatalog.xml
4. Post a comment here letting us know you’re done and how it worked for you.
That’s it! We are done for this week and you have a personalized web page that has the tools you need where you need them.
